She married Wallace Thomas in Los Angeles, California in 1904. Wallace Thomas’s family was most recently from Strathcona, Alberta, and this is where the new couple decided to settle, purchasing six lots. In 1908, Wallace bought his father’s farm in the Oliver District, near Township 52, Range 24, West of the 4th Meridian (52-24-W4). Wallace and Clara also obtained a homestead about ninety miles west of Edmonton, near Chip Lake, not far from Entwistle, Alberta; Robert Toane became their tenant on the Oliver homestead. In 1911, they returned to the Oliver farm and began to build a dairy. Wallace and Clara had four children: Clarence (1905), Gladys (1906), Genevieve (1908) and Montana (1910). They eventually sold their farm and retired to Victoria, British Columbia. Wallace died in 1955, and Clara in 1975 at the age of ninety-seven. | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Mrs. Gene Aitkins, Clara Thomas’s daughter, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1976 and 1982. She found them with her mother’s belongings following her mother’s death. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of photographs of early Edmonton, Alberta, an early view of Strathcona, North-West Territories, a Vegreville, Alberta farm, the Vegreville, Alberta fair, a worker in the Edmonton Bulletin Office and one outside the Office on a bicycle, a postcard of Leduc, Alberta’s main street, and a cyanotype of the Old Edmonton Hotel. | GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the biographical sketch is from the records and from South Edmonton Saga, which can be found in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library, 971.233 So87 PAA.
