It was likely established by Joseph L. Tyrrell, who had worked for McDermid Studios Limited (Ltd.) for a number of years. He ventured off on his own about 1930. Beginning in 1933, his Studio became known as Tyrrell Studios Ltd., under Val D. Nalty. In 1937, the Studio was managed by Mrs. Mary Lee McKinney, later Mary Lee Tyrrell. In 1945, the Studio was known as the Tyrrell Photo Studio, specialists in portrait and commercial photography, with Edward R. Nix and Frances E. Turner as photographers. Mrs. Turner remained the proprietor until about 1954, when Tyrrell Photo Studio likely went out of business. | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Mr. Turner (PR1975.0246), son of Frances Turner, and Judith K. Nuthack (PR1981.0391) deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1975 and 1981. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of records from Tyrrell Photo Studio and includes correspondence, accounts, index cards, receipts, magazines and other published material about photography, and photographs, negatives and glass negatives, mainly portraits, of men, women, young children and babies, and weddings. | GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the administrative history is taken from Henderson's Edmonton, Alberta, city directory and from the records .
