ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Alberta Genealogical Society (AGS) was founded in 1973 as a non-profit organization to encourage and promote the study of family history in Alberta. The AGS aids genealogical research in the province through direct consultation with researchers, newsletters and occasional publications, providing information including listings of cemeteries in Alberta, and serving as a lobby group for genealogical interests on issues important to the community. The Calgary Branch of the AGS was formed in 1974 but disbanded in 1980. Most of the former members of the AGS Calgary branch opted to leave the AGS to form a Calgary branch of the Alberta Family Histories Society.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of materials created by the Calgary Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society between 1976 and 1979. The fonds consists of cemetery listings for the Airdre Cemetery, the Wesley Band Cemetery at Morley, the Pine Creek Cemetery, the Cochrane Cemetery, the Haneyville Cemetery, and the Stoney Nakoda First Nation Cemetery.
LANGUAGE NOTE: The material is in English.
RELATED RECORDS: See also the Alberta Genealogical Society fonds for further materials on the Calgary Branch of the AGS.
GENERAL NOTE: The administrative records of the Calgary Branch of the AGS are included in the AGS fonds. As these materials were donated to the AGS by the Calgary Branch upon disbandment in 1980 and then donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta by the AGS, a decision was made to include these records within the AGS fonds.
