HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Debtors' Assistance Board was created under the authority of the Debtors' Assistance Act (S.A. 1943, c. 7), and consisted of one to three members, as appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. The Board had the following functions: to advise and assist debtors in adjusting and settling their debts with their creditors; to arrange meetings between debtors and creditors to assist in debt settlement; to advise and assist debtors in the preparation of a debt settlement plan to be presented to court; to aid debtors in obtaining postponements or extensions in the payment of their debt; to act as an intermediary in negotiations between debtors and creditors; to provide advice and assistance to debtors who were unable to meet their liabilities and were being pressed for payment by their creditors. The work of this Board replaced the implementation of the Debt Adjustment Act (S.A. 1923, c. 43).
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Some of the records in this series were created in different fonds, as the Debtors' Assistance Board came under the authority of the ministers for the Department of Municipal Affairs (1943-1950) and the Department of the Attorney General (1950-1973), before being transferred to the Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. All of the records were transferred to the Provincial Archives from the Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The series consists of records which document the function of the Debtors' Assistance Board to assist debtors in the handling and settlement of their debts. The records consist of various ledgers, containing information about contingency accounts; fodder relief accounts; bankruptcy cash books; trust accounts; permits; transfer vouchers; suspense accounts; hay sales accounts; trial balance ledgers; and cheque registers.
