ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Edo Nyland was born in Amsterdam in 1927, the youngest of four brothers. He studied Botany at the University of Amsterdam while completing his compulsory military service, before training at the Ophthalmic Hospital in Utrecht. He later assisted wounded Japanese in prisoner camps in the former Dutch East Indies. He returned to Amsterdam in 1950, taking a course in cabinetry, before moving to Vancouver to study forestry at the University of British Columbia. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry in 1957, spending the summers working for logging and timber companies. From 1957 to 1968 he served as the District Forester for the Whitecourt Forest in Alberta. In 1968 he became a Land Use Specialist at the Alberta Forest Service Head Office in Edmonton, attached to the Land-Use Assignment Section. In 1971 he became Regional Manager of the Uniformed (Federal) Yukon Lands and Forest Service, based in Whitehorse. He retired in 1983 and returned to British Columbia with his wife Elisabeth, serving two terms as an Alderman (1990-1996.)
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of material acquired by Edo Nyland and includes a map featuring Townships 53 to 68 between the 4th and 5th Meridian in Alberta dating from 1886; a copy of a map of the North-West Territories in 1877; copies of photographs featuring the Cooking Lake Forest Reserve dating from the early part of the 20th century; and diaries of two homesteaders dating from 1917 to 1925. The fonds also includes material related to an article Edo Nyland published in the 1969 edition of Alberta entitled, "Lost Loggers Railway Found" including research notes and photographs of a logging camp in the early part of the 20th century as well as maps and photographs taken in 1968 featuring the area of Connor Creek Brown Zone.
PHYSICAL CONDITION: One of the homesteading diaries is fragile.
