In 1887, the family moved to Weskan, Kansas to homestead. In 1892, James Hugh Stout, Clarence’s father, died after contracting pneumonia. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Stout (neé Snider), married James Ford Simonton in 1894. In 1895, the family moved to Alberta to homestead near Leduc.
Jessie Almira Sangster was born in 1888 and in 1899, the Sangster family traveled from Mount Pleasant, Michigan to homestead in the Conjuring Creek district in Alberta. The Sangsters operated the first postal service and a small store in the area.
On July 22, 1907 Clarence and Jessie married at Leduc, Alberta. In 1908, after flooding in the area, the couple moved from their farm to Strathcona, Alberta. Clarence wrote for a variety of newspapers including Strathcona’s ‘Plaindealer,’ the Daily Capital, the Morning and Evening Bulletins, as well as Edmonton’s Journal and the Calgary Daily News Telegram. The couple had three sons, Laurence, George, and Monte, born in 1910, 1915, and 1920 respectively. Clarence was an active member of the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association while Jessie was involved in the Alberta Women’s Institute. Clarence passed away in 1973. In 1976, Jessie married Stanley Cieslinski, a bachelor farmer whom she had met at her retirement manor. She passed away in 1979.
Monte Stout was born December 24, 1920 in Edmonton, Alberta, the youngest of Clarence and Jessie Stout’s three sons. When he was six, the family moved to Calgary, Alberta, where his father worked as news director for CFCN. Monte went to school at Crescent Heights Collegiate where he met Enid Appleton, who would later become his wife.
In 1943, Monte joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F) Coastal Command as Air Observer, and then was Navigator with Royal Air Force Atlantic Ferry Command (1944-1945). He navigated along the Atlantic ferry run and went on eight transatlantic flights to Europe and Africa during World War II. Monte was also 418 Squadron Navigator (1949-1953) and 18 Wing HQ Recruiting Officer (1953-1956).
In April 1944, he and Enid Appleton were married. They lived in Monte’s Montreal home before the couple settled in Edmonton after the war to raise their family. Monte remained active as a recruitment officer, studied civil engineering at the University of Alberta, and after two years there was able to secure work as an engineering technologist. Monte was a Surveyor for the City of Edmonton (1948-1956) then joined the Highway Division of Public Works Canada (1956-1969). As superintendent of engineering at Northern Transportation Company Ltd. (1970-1984), Monte managed shoreline installation projects along the Mackenzie River from Hay River to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.
Monte and Enid had three children, Marcia, Carolyn, and Raymond.
During his thirty years of retirement, Monte was active with many service groups and volunteered for a host of organizations including Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame and the Alberta Aviation Museum. After Enid died in 2004, Monte became a regular at the symphony and ballet. He died on August 30, 2014, having suffered a stroke a week earlier. He was 93 years old.
| | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds is mainly comprised of records that document different aspects of Monte Stout’s life, but also includes records of Clarence and Jessie Stout. The fonds consists of the diaries of Clarence Stout and Jessie Stout, cards and postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, drafts, wills and probates, genealogical records, citizenship documents, marriage and death certificates, an Alberta Inauguration speech, research, reports, agendas, minutes, properties and assets, leases and agreements, studies, surveys, plans, maps, oral histories, day planners, flight logs, R.C.A.F. workbooks and textbooks, school records, and yearbooks.
Photographs, negatives, and slides are of Monte Stout’s R.C.A.F. service and activities, fellow servicemen, shipyards, offices, job sites, coworkers, airplanes, air photos, friends, family, and survey photos. Videocassettes are interviews with pilots and veterans and the cinefilm are home movies by Monte Stout of family, Edmonton, Calgary and Hay River.
| | ARRANGEMENT NOTE: | The fonds was originally divided into two series, the C.H. Stout Diaries series and the Jessie Stout Diaries series, and arranged chronologically. During appraisal of PR2014.2154, it was decided to rearrange material into the following 5 series, which make up the fonds presently: Clarence and Jessie Stout series, Service Records series, Professional Career and Education series, Family Records series, and Community Involvement series.
