In 1920, the Hornes took up a half section of land three miles south of Claysmore, Alberta and began farming. In 1922 his mother passed away and Mr. Horne was sent to live with his grandparents in the Peace River area until 1927 when he returned to his father’s farm. Upon entering adulthood Mr. Horne began farming with his father and upon his father’s death in 1961, Mr. Horne took over sole responsibility of running the farm. Mr. Horne passed away in 1991 and the Horne farm was sold at auction and the proceeds donated to charity. | | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | After Mr. Horne’s death the material was collected by Mrs. Ann McClelland of Regina, Saskatchewan. Mrs. McClelland was James Horne’s cousin and the executor of the estate. Mrs. McClelland then gave the material to Martin Kenzies, Mr. Horne’s long time neighbour, in order for Mr. Kenzies to find an archival repository in Alberta for Mr. Horne’s records. In November 2004, Mr. Kenzies, with Mrs. McClelland’s approval, delivered the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of materials created or collected by James Horne relating to his family life and his farm and dating from 1892-1991. The fonds consists of personal and agricultural photographs, Mr. Horne’s diary, and other personal effects. |
