HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Charles Keeley was born in Corvallis, Oregon and relocated to Canada in 1912 to settle in the Mayerthorpe area. Marie Sherratt was born in Morden, Manitoba in 1907, and was one of three children of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Sherratt. Marie and Charles Keeley married in July 1927; they raised one daughter Jean. They farmed in Mayerthorpe area at Section 28, Township 55, Range 6, West of the 5th Meridian (28-55-6-W5) Throughout their lives, Marie and Charles were active in local organizations and boards such as the school board, a local cooperative grocery store board, The United Church, and the Alberta Wheat Pool. The Keeley's and were active in local political events of the early Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). Marie Keeley held membership with the Mayerthorpe and District History Book Society; the Society documented local family histories and compiled the publication Three Trails Home in 1980. Besides serving on the Society, Marie provided documentation for this publication. Marie died on January 13, 2004 at the age of 96, predeceased by Charles in 1982.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:In 2008, Jan Zwicky, Marie Keeley's granddaughter, donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of material created, collected, and arranged by Marie Keeley and includes diaries and correspondence written by Marie Keeley and Charles Keeley dating from 1912-1989; two scrapbooks featuring newspaper clippings and miscellaneous correspondence of local and provincial political events and issues, including the death of MLA Grant Notley, dating from 1955-1995; photographs and minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Ratepayers of the Mayerthorpe School District, 1932-1944; a record of location of original patented homesteaders of the Mayerthorpe area, undated.
