| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Arthur Vandeleur Stoney was originally from southwest Ireland and together with his brother, Butler Stoney, immigrated to Alberta and settled in the Bow Island area in early 1906, their father arriving soon after. The brothers homesteaded there until 1917 when they moved to a homestead in the Strome area located at Section 2, Township 46, Range 15, West of the 4th Meridian (2-46-15-W4). They knew very little about farming and they relied on money sent from Ireland to cover their losses. During the winter of 1919-1920 Butler Stoney returned to Ireland to work for a time to raise some money but by 1924 the farm had incurred major losses of livestock and amassed several large debts. They sold their homestead to various debtors to cover what they owed and moved once more to a homestead in Killam located at Section 34, Township 46, Range 15, West of the 4th Meridian (34-46-15-W4). Once again the brothers were unable to make any money with the homestead and in the early 1930’s they lost it. They then settled in Edmonton, Alberta to run a second hand store in the Calder area. |
| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Mr. Graham Stevens deposited these records in the Provincial Archives in 1972. The Archives purchased the records from Mr. Stevens who found them amongst some books that he purchased at O’Hara Sales in November of 1972. |
| SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of the personal records of Arthur Vandeleur Stoney and includes diaries containing entries about his daily activities, some correspondence and receipts, and a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings from the Lethbridge Daily Herald that pertain to local people, businesses, and events. |
| PHYSICAL CONDITION: | Some pages have been torn out of the diaries. |
| GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the biographical sketch was provided by Mr. and Mrs. George Crampton who were interviewed by Sharleen M. Chevraux. Mr. and Mrs. Crampton lived in the Strome area and knew Arthur and Butler Stoney.
