(Robert Nathaniel) Wilson was born in 1863 in Bowmanville, Ontario. He jointed the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) on June 7, 1881 and remained a member until September 27, 1884. He was stationed at such places as Stand Off and Fort Macleod, Alberta, and Fort Pitt and Battleford, Saskatchewan. Shortly after leaving the NWMP, Wilson purchased the Stand Off Trading Post on the Belly River and in 1888 he married Lila Hillier, who was born in 1868. Wilson worked as Indian agent for the Peigan Indian agency from 1898-1903 and worked as Indian agent on the Kainai First Nation Reserve from 1904-1911. Wilson was a fellow of the Geographic Society and also contributed many artifacts to the Chicago Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois. He recorded ethnological information about various Indigenous populations and wrote several scientific articles for the Royal Society of Canada. In 1921 he published a summary of the farm operations with the Kainai Nation, the Treaties that were signed with the Kainai Nation, and the treaty obligations of the Federal Government. Wilson returned to his trading post at Stand Off, Alberta in 1911 and died there in 1944, pre-deceased by his wife who died in 1939. | | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Mr. L.E. Buckwell deposited accession PR1972.0203 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1972. Mr. Buckwell’s relationship with R.N. Wilson is unknown. Mr. William A. Betts deposited accession PR1993.0364 in the Archives in 1993. Mr. Bett's father was executor of Wilson’s estate and had previously donated material to the Glenbow Museum. Dr. Allan Bryan from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta deposited accession PR1986.0100, a copy of R.N. Wilson’s diary, which is held at the Public Archives of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1986. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of photographs and copied photographs taken by R.N. Wilson depicting petroglyphs in Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park in Milk River, Alberta, dated ca. 1895, and a copy of R.N.
