His mother wanted him to become a priest, but in 1905, Georges and his wife Julia came to Canada, first in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba and then settling at Rich Valley, near Lac Majeau, Alberta. He was secretary-treasurer and trustee for the Rich Valley School District No. 1802. Georges was an acclaimed author, and his works include Le Lys de Sang (1921), Nipsya (1928), Siraf (1934) and La Forêt (1935). He was also an amateur horticulturalist and bred a new type of rose, the Thérèse Bugnet rose. In 1970, he was awarded the French title of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques for his contribution to expanding the French culture in the world and in 1978, a Honoris Causa Doctor of Laws recognition from the University of Alberta. Georges died January 11, 1981 in Saint-Albert, 101 years old. | | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Father Georges Durocher, Marthe Beauchamp, Alice Trottier and Yvonne Byer (Bugnet) deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds includes photocopied letters from 1928, 1957 and 1961, photocopied newspaper clippings, a photocopy of Bugnet’s diary from 1954 to 1971, a photocopy of Bugnet’s botanical notes, and various certificates and awards.
