HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: John Dunbar Waring was born October 28, 1895 and died September 22, 1957. He served overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces from May 27, 1915 to May 24, 1919 and enlisted in the permanent army in 1921. Upon leaving the army in July 1924, he became a homesteader for five years, changing his name from Vella to Waring in 1926. On October 20, 1931, he engaged in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Regimental No. 11083) at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and was posted to Regina, Saskatchewan and Calgary, Alberta for training. From August 1934 until June 1945, J.D. Waring served at a number of different posts including the Bow Island Detachment, the Blairmore Detachment, the Banff Mounted Section and posts in the Northwest Territories, the Yukon Territory and Saskatchewan. On June 13, 1945 he became an invalid and began to receive an invalid’s pension. He moved to his homestead at Anzac, Alberta, where he died on September 22, 1957. Funeral services were held on September 24, 1957 at the Fort McMurray Anglican Cemetery.A self-educated man, J.D. Waring spent his retirement years working as a field observer for Dr. William Rowan, a biologist and teacher who was conducting a survey into the ten-year population cycle of the snowshoe hare. J.D. Waring also worked under the auspices of Mr. Al Oeming, a noted Edmonton naturalist who later became the director of the Alberta Game Farm. Their work consisted of carrying out a search for the Great Grey Owl between 1953 and 1957. He was also employed by the meteorological division of the Department of Transport as a weather observer for the Anzac region, and for a short while he served as a Justice of the Peace. J.D. Waring has also written several short stories, poems and anecdotes, which were never published.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of diaries from 1941-1957, field reports, correspondence, manuscripts of short stories and poems, sketches, photographs, maps and other material. Adhering to the creator’s personal index to files, the fonds has been arranged into the following series: Birds; General; Mammals; Hares & Rabbits; and Miscellaneous Papers.

GENERAL NOTE: Several photographs depict graphic images of victims of murder or suicide.
