Arthur and his family moved to the Austin Texas area and purchased the Elm Grove Dairy circa 1894. They remained in Texas until 1905 when they returned to Port Sydney, Ontario. In addition to farming, Ladell operated a general store from home, served as treasurer of Ellswick School District No. 2203 circa 1910, and worked as Postmaster for the Bittern Lake Post Office (later renamed Halley Post Office) from 1908 to 1917.
