HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: John (Johnny) Harrold Junior (Jr.) was born December 22, 1975 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland; he was the son of John and Janet (Jessie) (Nicolson) Harrold. The Harrold family immigrated to Alberta in 1888 and took up a homestead near Edmonton at Section 13, Township 54, Range 24, West of the 4th Meridian (13-54-24-W4). Johnny acquired his own homestead in 1897, the southwest quarter of Section 18, Township 54, Range 24, West of the 4th Meridian (18-54-24-W4), purchasing more land in 1901 and 1903 at Section 14, Township 54, Range 26, West of the 4th Meridian (14-54-26-W4) and Section 13, Township 54, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian (13-54-25-W4) respectively. He married Sarah Violet Latimer on December 20, 1905. Sarah Violet was born September 29, 1885 near Poplar Lake, North-West Territories; she was the daughter of William and Katherine (Stanton) Latimer. Johnny and Sarah had three children, Catherine (born 1906) (Carruthers), Jack Glyn (born March 6, 1910) and Maxine Jane (born 1924) (LeClair). Johnny was active in his community and served as secretary-treasurer of the Bellerose School District Number (No.) 6 and Bellerose Social Club, and as a councilor for the Sturgeon Municipal District. He also served on the Dominion Bacon Board during World War I and was an early member of the farmers' association known as the Society of Equity. Johnny died July 30, 1943, and was survived by his wife Sarah, who died March 22, 1960.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mrs. Olive Harrold, the wife of Jack Harrold, allowed the Provincial Archives of Alberta to copy records in 1977. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Harrold, Mrs. E.B. (Maxine) LeClair, Janet Akerman (daughter of John Harrold Jr.'s brother Donald) and Aubrey Harrold (son of Jack Harrold) allowed the Provincial Archives of Alberta to copy other records in 1979.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of the personal records of John Harrold Jr. and Sarah Harrold dating 1900-1959 and includes correspondence, an obituary for Sarah Harrold, farm account books that contain financial records, journal entries and inventories, diaries, and scrapbook. Fonds also includes a copied photograph depicting various members of Harrold family and their farm activities, and a copied township map of Edmonton, Alberta and the surrounding area.
GENERAL NOTE: Included in PR1977.0171 are records belonging to the following fonds: Bellerose School District No. 25 fonds; Bellerose Social Club fonds; Jessie Holmes fonds. Included in PR1979.0334 are records belonging to the Bellerose Harmony Club fonds. Some images can be located in the A file of the Provincial Archives of Alberta reference prints under the numbers A.11,138 through A.11,146. Information for the biographical sketch was taken from the records and from A Cameo of the West, located in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library under location number 971.233 Sp32. The location of the Harrold homestead is represented according to the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) system.
