ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: (Sarah) Hazel McCardell (nee Strang) was born on April 24, 1891. She emigrated with her family from Springville, Utah in the United States to Claresholm, Alberta in 1904. Her grandfather was James Jesse Strang (1813-1856), a Mormon leader and Michigan legislator who led a community of Mormons on Beaver Island, Michigan between 1847 and 1856. James Phineas Strang, McCardell’s father, was born to James Jesse Strang and Sarah Adelia Wright. James Phineas Strang married Lydia Houtz and together they had at least two children, Hazel and Mark. Hazel Strang married William H. McCardell in 1917 who served in World War I as a pilot for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and in the 1930’s served in the Canadian Forestry Service while Hazel McCardell spent time at the Central Alberta Sanitarium suffering from tuberculosis. McCardell and her husband served during World War II as home-front volunteers and observers for the Canadian and American militaries, the Canadian Red Cross, and St. John’s Ambulance. Hazel McCardell was also a musician and taught music during most of her adult life.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:David A. Kales, President of the Edmonton District Historical Society, previously known as The Historical Society of Alberta, Amisk Waskahegan Chapter, deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1991. Hazel McCardell’s relationship with David Kales and the Edmonton District Historical Society is unknown.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of the personal papers of Hazel McCardell and includes music scores, poems, songs, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, diaries, an autograph book, articles, newsletters, correspondence, historical/biographical sketches, family histories, pamphlets, notices, a wedding invitation, tax receipts, journals, magazines, books, telegrams, an insurance policy, notes, returned cheques, negatives and photographs depicting family members and various people, views, buildings, airplanes, air pilots, street views, fires, and plane crashes, and cinefilms depicting home movies. Fonds includes many records pertaining to Hazel McCardell’s research of the Strang family, Jesse James Strang, and the Mormon community in St. James, Michigan, USA. Fonds also contains records pertaining to William McCardell’s service in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forestry Service.
