HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Chalmers United Church was established in Edmonton in1925 with the creation of the United Church of Canada from a union of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational denominations. Prior to unification it existed as Chalmers Presbyterian Church, established in 1911. In 1928, Calder United Church, formerly Calder Methodist Church, joined with Chalmers United to form one congregation under the name of Chalmers United Church. Chalmers United Church existed until 1994 when it amalgamated to form the new congregation of Chalmers-Castle Downs United Church.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Records deposited under accession number PR1975.0387 were acquired sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. Records received after 1975 have come from the congregation, church members, or officers of the presbytery or the Conference. Jean McKinley deposited the records constituting PR1997.0709 on September 10, 1997, PR1999.0342 on Jan. 19, 1999, PR2003.0505 on Nov. 27, 2003, and PR2005.0276 on January 31, 2005 on behalf of Chalmers-Castle Downs United Church.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of annual reports (1957-1994); Correspondence (1925-1934, 1961-1980); administrative records (1940-1964); Board of Managers records (1925-1944); Official Board records (1944-1981); Committee of Stewards records (1952-1966, 1979-1981); Session records (1952-1981); congregational meetings (1971-1981); church registers of baptism, marriage, and burial (1954-1992); Guest book (1958-1961); financial records (1946-1987); Building Committee records (1939-1973); Visitation Committee records (1967); Pastoral Relations Committee records (1963, 1971); Ladies' Aid records (1925-1957); Women's Association records (1954-1961); United Church Women records (1960-1972); Sunday School records (1984-1987); orders of service (1958-1982, with gaps); Pictorial Directory (1986); newsletters (1967, 1976-1978, 1989); photographs [1960-1970], 1980, 1987); School for Elders manuals (1953-1954); Historical Data (1982); and a "Christian Education for Christian Living" booklet (n.d.).
