| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | St. Stephen's United Church, originally called Forest Heights United Church, was established in Edmonton in 1925 upon the creation of The United Church of Canada from a union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational denominations. The origin of the congregation is from Dundonald Presbyterian Church that was established in 1913 and existed until 1923 when it became Forest Heights Union Church. At the time of official church union in 1925 the congregation was formally constituted as Forest Heights United Church and located at 104 Avenue and 81 Street. The congregation continued under that name until 1961 when it moved to a new location at 79 Street and 101 Avenue and the congregation was renamed St. Stephen's United Church. St. Stephen's United continued to exist until 1992 when it closed and the congregation amalgamated with Strathearn United Church (1951-1992). The amalgamated congregation retained the name of Strathearn United Church (1992-) and is located at 95 Avenue and 85 Street in Edmonton Presbytery. |
| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Records deposited under accession number PR1975.0387 were acquired sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. Records received after 1975 have come from the congregation, church members, or officers of the presbytery or the Conference. |
