ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers was first organized as the United Machinists and Mechanical Engineers in Atlanta, GA in 1888. The union was founded in order to represent and protect the rights of employees working in the machinist trade through the pursuit of higher wages, shorter work days, and employee safety through arbitration with employers.

The union changed its name to the National Association of Machinists in 1889 and again to the International Association of Machinists is 1891. In 1965, the union ultimately became the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The union as a whole is governed by the Grand Lodge, although District Lodges grew from the desire to represent specific regional occupations with Local Lodges growing out of District Lodges. District Lodge No. 2 was headquartered in Winnipeg and provided representation for all Local Lodges in Canada. Following the organization of the District Lodge No.2, Local Lodge 817 formed in Edmonton in 1908. The Lodge was eventually dissolved by the Grand Lodge in 1994 with Local Lodge 1579 becoming the successor organization.
