HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Roma Plante Newcombe was born in 1934 in St. Edouard, Alberta. She is a descendant of Edouard Labrie (1859-1924), for whom St. Edouard, Alberta is named.

Roma Plante married Dale Newcombe in 1978. He died in 1982. Roma lived in St. Paul and Edmonton, where she taught French and Social Studies at St. Joseph Composite High School for 22 years. She is a watercolor painter and genealogist. She conducted extensive research in the Plante and Labrie families, who pioneered in Beaumont and St. Edouard.

Dale Newcombe’s father, Fred Newcombe, was born in 1894 and was a captain for the Allied Military Government of Occupied Territories (AMGOT) in Europe.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of family histories for the Plante and Labrie families, as well as correspondence, images and research papers related to these histories. The records document the origins of the families from France to Quebec to Alberta, from the 17th century to the end of 20th century. Also included are photographs from locations where Fred Newcombe served during World War II and after, and a 2 year collection of The Gateway, the journal of the students at University of Alberta.
