HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Ron Winstance-Smith was during his life time considered the leading expert on maps in the West. In the early 1970s he became interested in architectural landscapes maps and he served on the Alberta Government Recreational Committee as Secretary. For 21 years from 1973 to 1993 he was the curator of maps at the University of Alberta. He was a buyer and seller of antiquarian maps. After his retirement in 1993 he became a map volunteer at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and he helped to arrange and describe cartographical records donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He collected maps and donated them to institutions where he believed they would complete gaps. Ron Winstance-Smith passed away on September 25, 2003 in Edmonton.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of Alberta maps and architectural drawings. The maps include: a 1929 Federal Department of Interior map with numbers of vacant quarter sections in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta; a 1916 map of the Rocky Mountains produced by the British Columbia Department of lands; a Federal index map to the Old Geographical Series of the Department of Interior maps; a topographical map of the area to the North of Yellowhead Pass; a Mundy map of School Division 13 Clover Bar. The architectural drawings include: 4 drawings of the Lion's playground in Slave Lake; 4 drawings of the Innisfail Arena renovations; 4 drawings from the Government of Alberta Recreational In Service Training course; 1 drawing of the Fort Mc Murray Golf Course and one drawing of the site of the proposed Central Park in Vermilion.
