He spent two years working as a junior architect in London, England, before the Second World War. Following the war, he was a senior architect for four years before coming to Canada in 1949. He held a similar post in Toronto, Ontario, but moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1950, where he was employed as a chief draftsman with an architect in private practice. He then was briefly employed by another city architect before finding employment with the Government of Alberta. He became Chief Architect for the Department of Public Works, and was involved in the design of the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton and Calgary. He ended his work with the Department of Public Works on September 30, 1958, and on October 1, 1958, entered into a partnership with Gerard Diamond, establishing Diamond-Clarke & Associates. This partnership dissolved in about 1968/1969, and Clarke worked on his own before forming Clarke, Saunders, Swinton & Associates with Kennth Saunders and Jack Swinton. This firm became Clarke, Saunders and Boucock & Associates mid-1970 when William E. Boucock joined. Clarke worked on his following this partnership, which dissolved around 1974. Clarke was a Member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (M.R.A.I.C.). Ronald married Betty Kathleen, and they had three children: Jennifer (born September 2, 1951), Penny (born September 3, 1953) and Peter (born August 7, 1956).
| | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Betty Clarke, widow of Ronald Clarke, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1981. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds includes 2 series: Aberhart Hospital records and Health Sciences Centre records. The fonds also includes the following: correspondence, news clippings, receipts, reports, articles, programs, seating plans, examinations, and specifications for the Provincial Auditoria, the Provincial Mental Hospital (Ponoka), the Alberta School for the Deaf, the Treasury Branch Building (Edmonton), and the Biology Wing, University of Alberta. | | ARRANGEMENT NOTE: | Due to the disorganized nature of the records, those records not directly relating to the Diamond-Clarke & Associates fonds, the Clarke, Saunders, Boucock & Associates fonds or the Polaris Construction Limited fonds were included in Ronald Clarke's personal fonds. Included in accession PR1981.0218 are records belonging to the Diamond-Clarke fonds (and Edmonton Engineering Associates Limited sous-fonds), the Clarke, Saunders, Boucock & Associates fonds, and the Polaris Construction Limited fonds.
Plans for the Health Sciences Centre, 1968 were transferred to the University of Alberta Archives, Edmonton, Alberta and were assigned accession number 81-83.
