HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: James Alexander (Alex) Allan married Eloise Moore sometime between 1955 and 1957; Eloise was the daughter of Ora B. and Erma May (Sutton) Moore. Before marrying, Eloise was a member of Beta Sigma Phi’s Iota Chapter, Xi Epsilon Chapter and an advisor to Beta Chapter’s Nu Phi Mu unit. As well, she was secretary of the Fort Edmonton Chapter of the Ancient, Mystical Order Rosae Crucis (AMORC). Alex and Eloise had one son James, born circa (ca.) 1958. Alex worked for Calgary Power Limited, possibly for a time at Wabamun, Alberta. Between 1967 and 1970, Alex served as a councilor for the Summer Village of Lakeview, and between 1970 and 1973 shared the duties of mayor of the Summer Village of Lakeview with Gordon Raitt.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records, primarily published materials, relating to the lives of Alex and Eloise Allan and includes various pamphlets and booklets relating to Beta Sigma Phi and the Rosicrucian Order (the Ancient, Mystical Order Rosae Crucis), a 50th anniversary program for the Grand Lodge of Alberta of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (A.F. & A.M.), Drumheller memorabilia, Calgary Power safety rules for employees, a report entitled “Preparation and Commissioning of new Steam Generator and Turbo Generator Unit at Wabamun, Alberta,” Edmonton Light Opera and Edmonton Civic Opera Society Incorporated (Inc.) programs, programs for events sponsored by the As One That Serves (A.O.T.S.) District Council of Edmonton, the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (Edmonton Branch) and Women’s Musical Club of Edmonton, an issue of The Medical Missionary: Alberta’s Own Health Journal, material related to Saskatchewan’s centennial, Corrine Jordan booklets and a photograph, possibly a group portrait of Beta Sigma Phi members.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the biographical sketch is taken from Edmonton Journal obituaries, from Henderson's Edmonton, Alberta city directories, from Hills of Hope: The Next Generation, 1940-2000, which is available in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library, 971.233 H559 2000, and from the records. The image can be located in the A file of the Provincial Archives of Alberta reference prints under the number A.17,214. Copies of Torch, a Beta Sigma Phi magazine, and Rosicrucian membership lists were returned to the donor. James A. Allan also deposited some records of the Summer Village of Lakeview in the Provincial Archives of Alberta; they can be located through the accession number PR1986.0386.
