HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1978, Julie Anne LeGras, Mair Smith, and Halyna Freeland established Common Woman Books, a mail order source for feminists in Edmonton, Alberta. The first Common Woman Books bookstore opened in Edmonton in 1981. The bookstore was owned and operated by a non-profit collective. The store stocked feminist, gay, and lesbian literature, newspapers, music as well as books for young adults. In 1992, the bookstore closed.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records relating to the operation of Common Woman Books, including correspondence, invoices, receipts, inventories, ordering procedures, book inventories, records related to special events held at the store, photographs of members, and four issues of The Newsmagazine by Alberta Women.
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: The fonds was physically arranged into five groups: Administration, Book Ordering, Special Events, Miscellaneous, and Book Inventory Index Cards. However, original order was maintained at file level
