HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Bonnyville Nouvelle was a weekly newspaper that was first published on May 18, 1935 in Bonnyville, Alberta. Founder John Johnston published and edited the Nouvelle from the Larivier Building on Main Street, Bonnyville until his death on August 10, 1940. Following Johnston’s passing, his wife, Gertrude Johnston, assumed the role of publisher and editor. She served in this capacity until March of 1942. During this period, issues were four pages long and primarily covered local and regional news: Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Ardmore, Harold Lake, Grand Centre, Glendon, and other nearby communities were the central focus of reporting. On July 17, 1943, the last issue of the Bonnyville Nouvelle was printed for circulation.

The Bonnyville Tribune, run by Ovila Baril, took the place of the Nouvelle as Bonnyville's sole paper when it began printing weekly in the summer of 1947. Beginning with a change in ownership to Sun Publishing Co. of Edmonton in 1962, the Bonnyville Tribune went through a series of changes including amalgamations with the Grande Centre Times and the Cold Lake Courier.

On March 1, 1967, however, a new iteration of the Bonnyville Nouvelle was issued by Meridian Press Co. of Lloydminster, published by Manfred Kornert and edited by Karl Mueller. On January 3, 1978, the Bonnyville Nouvelle was amalgamated with the Grand Centre Globe (published as the Bonnyville Nouvelle, Grand Centre Globe), but this change would only be short-lived as within two years the Nouvelle was again publishing solely under its own name. Great West Publishing bought the Bonnyville Nouvelle from Manfred Kornert in 2004.

The Nouvelle is still actively publishing as of February 2019.

CUSTODIAL HISTORY:
