HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Duhamel Historical Society was founded in 1962 to support the preservation of local historic sites and to collect information on the history of the area. The Society erected signs to promote historic sites, organized Corpus Christi celebrations and historical displays, and welcomed visitors and groups interested in the history of the area. The Society also organized social activities, picnics and bake sales in order to generate revenue, in addition to working on applications to receive provincial grants. In 1974 the Society published a book on the history of the Duhamel area and in 1975 the Society recommended the takeover of the St. Thomas Mission Church by the Government of Alberta. This church was built in 1883 and preservation of this site was one of the recent main projects handled by the Society. |
