HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Irene Moir has been a member of the Alberta Women's Institutes for 51 years. She has held all the positions (Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, President) at the Colchester Branch in Sherwood Park; she was also a Constituency Convenor and a District Director in Central Alberta. The functions of the Women's Institutes were to improve social conditions in rural and other communities by means of studying home economics and child welfare. The institutes functioned throughout Canada to encourage agriculture and improve agricultural conditions. Their aim remained the betterment of life for both home and country. In 1997, Irene Moir attended the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada convention in Hamilton celebrating the 100 Years of Women's Institutes in Ontario and in Canada. She made the scrapbook with material she collected and created during the convention. The first Women's Institute in Canada as well as in the world was founded in Stoney Creek, Ontario in 1897 by Adelaide Hunter Hoodless born in Hamilton. The movement spread quickly in Ontario, in other Canadian provinces as well as in the rest of the world. The first branch in Alberta was established in Lea Park in 1909. In 1933, the Women's Institutes covered 26 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America. In 1997 for its 100th anniversary, the organization had more than seven million members in sixty-five countries with seven representatives at the United Nations. In 2000, Irene Moir attended the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada meeting in Brandon, Manitoba and in 2003, the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada meeting in Lennoxville, Quebec. The Federated Women's Institutes of Canada is formed by all the Women's Institutes founded in Canada, including the Alberta Women's Institutes.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The fonds was deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta by Irene Moir in 2009 when the Alberta Women's Institutes collected records to organize a travelling display for its 100th anniversary.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of two scrapbooks created by Irene Moir on the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada, one scrapbook in 1997 and one from 2000 to 2003. The first scrapbook is about Irene Moir's attendance at the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada celebrating 100 years of Women's Institutes in 1997. The second scrapbook was created in 2000 and 2003 with material Irene Moir collected at the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada meeting in Brandon, Manitoba in 2000 and at the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada meeting in Lennoxville, Quebec in 2003
