HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Harold Fletcher McKee was born July 24, 1880 in Peterborough, Ontario; he was the son of Alexander and Maria (Burnham) McKee. He married Alice Maud Staines on January 17, 1906. Harold and Alice moved to Strathcona, Alberta in 1907 and Harold became the bookkeeper for J. Gainer & Company. Harold continued to work for Gainers, Limited, becoming secretary-treasurer and then manager. In the mid 1920s, he became instrumental in the short-lived Straw Paper Company of Canada Limited, based in Edmonton, Alberta. In about 1928, he became the secretary of the Industries Committee, a joint effort formed by the Edmonton Industrial Association, Edmonton’s City Council, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association. On March 5, 1931, he was appointed business manager for the special relief department for the City of Edmonton; this work was initially done in conjunction with his work as secretary of the Industries Committee. Harold retired in about 1942. Harold and Alice had one son, Roger. Alice died February 22, 1950. Harold Fletcher died January 4, 1977.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Diane Coulthard, Harold Fletcher McKee’s granddaughter, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1989.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records illustrating the various facets of Harold Fletcher McKee’s life and primarily includes reports, correspondence and summaries from McKee’s employment with Gainers, Limited and as manager of the Special Relief Department (of particular note are suggested menus during depression and records regarding mass housing). The fonds also includes information about the Navy League of Canada’s membership campaign, personal correspondence, a bank book, a booklet of a reprint of a Radio Broadcast by Mayor Knott (1934), an annual report and a virtually unused bankbook for Holy Trinity Church (Anglican), a prize list for the Edmonton Horticultural and Vacant Lots Garden Association, an Edmonton Labour Review and First Aid Manual, a booklet of the rules, regulations and bylaws of the Edmonton Live Stock Exchange, forms relating to the 1500 Club of Edmonton District, cartoon drawings, a calendar for the Metropolitan United Church, booklets with lists of post offices, a booklet from Silver Heights Peon Gardens in Edmonton, a prospectus for the Western Canada Woolen Mills Limited, an Edmonton promotional booklet “Where Opportunity Beckons” (1925) and maps of Edmonton and Alberta.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the biographical sketch is taken from the Provincial Archives of Alberta information file, from Edmonton Journal obituaries and from the records. This fonds was donated at the same time, and in the same accession as the following unrelated fonds: the George A. McKee fonds (PR1872), the Alberta Systems, Teachers’ Agency Department fonds (PR1869), the Edmonton Industrial Association fonds (PR1870) and the Straw Paper Company of Canada Limited fonds (PR1871).
