HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Donald McBride was the Principal of the Edmonton Residential School from 1961 to 1966 when the administration of the school was transferred from the United Church of Canada to the Indian Affairs Branch, Government of Canada. The Edmonton Residential School was founded in September 1923 in order to replace the Edmonton Industrial School, founded in 1920 to take the place of the Red Deer Industrial School which closed in 1919. The goal of the three schools was to educate Native children, in central Alberta, in an area served by the United Church of Canada. The Edmonton Residential School closed in 1975 a few years after Donald McBride's retirement from his teaching career. Donald McBride was active in several fields of interest. In an earlier part of his life, from 1945 to 1950, he served as Secretary of the Fairview Credit Union.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Donald McBride kept with him, as part of his personal papers, several records from the Red Deer Industrial School, the Edmonton Industrial School and the Edmonton Residential School. When he died in 1997, his son decided to donate his father's personal papers to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of daily registers of the Edmonton Residential School from 1942 to 1967, financial records of the Red Deer Industrial School from 1913 to 1919, of the Edmonton Industrial School from 1920 to 1923, of the Edmonton Residential School from 1923 to 1952, and administrative files relating to the staff and students of the Edmonton Residential School from 1958 to 1969; Fairview Credit Union Board of Directors minutes from 1945 to 1950.
