HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Edmonton Alberta Anti-Vivisection Society was initially formed as the Edmonton Branch of the Animal Defence League of Canada; the first meeting was held September 11, 1961. Geraldine McKechnie was elected president, Elizabeth Brenton vice-president and Barbara Chapin secretary-treasurer. Professor Edward Rose and Rev. E. Rex Taylor were ex-officio members of the executive. Following a disagreement with the Animal Defence League of Canada over issues relating to vivisection, the branch reorganized themselves as an independent society. The Edmonton Alberta Anti-Vivisection Society was incorporated under the Societies Act on December 28, 1962. The Society had as its objective the total abolition of all vivisection experiments and other experiments of a painful nature. The Society was dissolved June 30, 1976. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of the records of the Edmonton Alberta Anti-Vivisection Society and primarily includes correspondence, but also includes notes, bylaws, reports, financial statements, Edmonton Alberta Anti-Vivisection Society bulletins, Animal Defence League of Canada and Canadian Federation of Humane Societies newsletters, and newspaper clippings. The fonds includes early correspondence of Professor Ed Rose regarding vivisection and cruelty towards animals. |
GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the administrative history is taken from the Alberta Gazette and from the records.
A rubber stamp from the Edmonton Alberta Anti-Vivisection Society was transferred to the Human History division of the Provincial Museum of Alberta.
