HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Edmonton First Ukrainian United Church was established in 1925 with the creation of the United Church of Canada, a union of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational denominations. The congregation existed previously as the Edmonton First Ukrainian Presbyterian Church, established circa 1912, to serve the Ukrainian population in Edmonton. The 1926 United Church of Canada Year Book refers only to Ukrainian United Church as a former Methodist congregation and under the ministry of Reverend William Pike, and it is possible that this Presbyterian/United congregation continued until circa 1932 as indicated by entries in the church register. The title of the register is amended to read "Bissell" and possibly it joined with the former Methodist congregation under Reverend Pike at All People's Mission, which later was re-named the Bissell Institute in the early 1930s. |
CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | The register was located in the records of Bissell United Church. It was acquired by the Conference Archives sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of church registers of baptisms (1912-1925); marriages (1912-1925); and burials (1915-1925). |
