Established in 1939, the National Film Act, allowed the formation of a comprehensive board to produce, distribute, and promote Canadian films. The NFB produces both English and French programs and maintains a head office in Ottawa and production centers in both English and French including the following: English Animation Studio, Atlantic Centre (English), Quebec Centre (English), Ontario Centre (English), North West Centre (English), Pacific and Yukon Centre (English), Prairie Centre (English), Ontario and West Studio (French), French Animation and Youth Studio (French), Quebec Studio (French), and Studio Acadie (French). The NFB maintains a distribution network with partners in both the public sector (public and school libraries) and the private (distributors, cataloguers, movie theatre chains, video retail outlets, etc.) in order to provide access to its audiovisual works in all provinces and territories of Canada. It also distributes its products internationally through offices in Paris and New York, and maintains a sales representative in Los Angeles. A Government Film Commission and Chairperson, a director of Business Affairs Legal Services, Director General of the English Program, Director General of the French program, Director General of the Technical Innovation and Resources, Director General of Marketing and Communications, Director General of Administration, Director General of Distribution, Director General of Strategic Planning and Government Relations, and Director General of Business Affairs and Legal Services manage the NFB.
Throughout its operation the NFB has garnered numerous awards including Genies, Oscar awards, Canadian Television and Broadcasting Awards and various international honours.

In 1999, Ruth Bridge of the Strathcona County Library donated material comprising PR1999.0467 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of film productions containing Albertan content such as Alberta history, events, environments, and individuals, produced by the National Film Board of Canada dating from 1960 to 1993.
