Prior to their move to Edmonton, the Starkmans had spent time in New York, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, originally immigrating from Lubomel, Poland in 1927. George died in 1965 and Molly died in 1992.
In 1960, Howard graduated with a degree in law from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, and married Esther Estrin.
Esther Estrin was born to Abraham and Rebecca in 1940 in Edmonton, Alberta. Abraham Estrin was a lifetime member of the Beth Israel Synagogue, and President of the Talmud Torah from 1938-1942. He was also active in the Chevra Kadisha.
Howard served as President of the Misericordia Hospital Foundation and as a member of the Executive of the Misericordia Hospital Board of Directors. He also served as First Chair of the Capital Heath Crown Foundation, President of the Congregation of Beth Israel, and President of the Talmud Torah Board of Directors. In 2003, Alan Rock, Minister of Industry, appointed Howard to the Board of Director's to Edmonton's Northlands Park. Howard currently works at the law firm of Synder and Company in Edmonton.
Esther has been a teacher with the pubic school system for over thirty years. Twice elected as Public School Trustee for the City of Edmonton, she also served on the Edmonton Public School Board Committee and the Board of Health. Throughout her career, Esther has also been involved in literacy programs for youth and adults. Esther won a District Merit Award in 2000 for her contribution to literacy programs. She also serves on the board of the Beth Israel Synagogue.
Together, Howard and Esther have participated in numerous community activities. They regularly donate to the Edmonton Community Foundation, the Legal Archives Society of Alberta, and Citadel Theatre. In 2003, Howard and Esther were named 2003 Negrev Dinner Honorees. In 2006, the province of Alberta also awarded Esther and Howard with a Centennial medal for their service to the community.
