Réal Girard est né le 31 janvier 1944 à Saint-Ambroise de Chicoutimi au Québec. En 1955, la famille Girard déménagea à Saint-Isidore, Alberta. Réal Girard fit ses études â Falher (1956-1959), Edmonton et Montréal, où il finit ses études classiques en 1964. Il obtint son Baccalauréat en Éducation à l'Université de Moncton, sa Maîtrise en littérature à l'Université de l'Alberta et son doctorat à l'Université de Paris IV, avec une thèse sur la littérature québécoise. Il revint après au Canada où il enseigna à l'Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. C'est là qu'il rencontra le poète saguenéen Camil Lavoie et qu'ils formèrent une troupe de théâtre connue sous le nom de L'Aut'Bord.

En 1979, Réal Girard revint en Alberta. Il fut sollicité d'organiser des spectacles annuels par des écoles et troupes de danse folklorique à Edmonton, Bonnyville, Saint-Paul et Saint-Isidore, qui devinrent des événements populaires dans les gymnases d'écoles ou les arénas. En 1986 il produisit le spectacle Légende de l'Avenir, pour célébrer le 60e anniversaire de l'Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta.

De 1979 à 1994, il fut impliqué dans des projets d'histoires locales : il fut éditeur pour les livres d'histoire de Bonnyville (Échos d'Autrefois), Saint-Paul (Du Passé au Présent) et du Légal (Vision, Courage, Héritage). Il s'impliqua aussi auprès de l'Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta, régionale d'Edmonton, de Francophonie jeunesse de l'Alberta et de projet Héritage franco-albertain.

Réal Girard was born on January 31, 1944 at Saint-Ambroise de Chicoutimi, Quebec. After his family moved to Saint-Isidore, Alberta in 1955, he studied in Falher (1956-1959), Edmonton and Montreal where he finished his classic studies in 1964. He earned his Bachelor degree in Education at the University of Moncton in 1969, a Masters degree in literature at the University of Alberta in 1971 and a PhD at the University of Paris IV with a thesis on Quebec's literature. He then returned to Canada where he taught at the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi. There he met the Saganean poet Camil Lavoie with whom he formed a protest theatre group known as L'Aut'Bord.

In 1979, Réal Girard returned to Alberta. He was asked by school organizers and folk dancing troupes in Edmonton, Bonnyville, Saint-Paul and Saint-Isidore to produce their annual shows, which became popular theatrical events in school gyms and arenas. In 1986, he produced the show Legend of the Future, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of l'Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta.

From 1979 to 1994, he was involved in local history projects, including: Bonnyville (Echoes of the Past), Saint-Paul (From Past to Present), and Legal (Vision, Courage, Heritage). He was also involved with Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta, Edmonton district, with Francophonie jeunesse de l'Alberta and with the Héritage franco-albertain project.
