ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Founded on March 13, 1978 under the Alberta Societies Act, the objects of The Seven Arts Club were: (a) to encourage and promote artistic endeavor; (b) to educate and provide for the dissemination of information about any and all facets of the arts in Edmonton or elsewhere; (c) to alleviate the poverty and hardship of artists; (d) to acquire properties, by purchase or otherwise, and to erect or otherwise provide a building or buildings, furniture and equipment, for the purposes of the Society; (e) to raise funds to support the Objects of the Society from government, industry and the general public; (f) to sell, manage, lease, mortgage, dispose of or otherwise deal with the property of the Society; (g) the operations of the Society shall be carried on without purpose of gain for its members and any profits or other accretions the Society shall be used in promoting its object. The Society also provided scholarships to individuals working in music, drama, dance or the visual arts. The Club organized a number of annual events including an Arts and Craft Fair, a summer dinner and tour, a Christmas brunch, workshops, a photography contest, a talent showcase, theatre events, and monthly bulletins. The title of the club was adapted from the "The Seven Liberal Arts," first given by the Greeks to represent all of the branches of human knowledge. The Club was dissolved, approximately, in 1994.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds includes executive records, financial records as well as the work of the committees. Fonds consists of minutes of meetings, membership and mailing lists, reports, scholarship awards and evaluations, tax returns and registrations, press releases, newsletters, and records pertaining to social events and activities like the Christmas Fair.
