1871 Photograph of Fort Edmonton

Title: 1871 Photograph of Fort Edmonton
Object Number: PR2993
Notes: The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) established Fort Edmonton on the Northern Saskatchewan River in 1795 to rival the North West Company's fort. After the amalgamation of the two companies in 1821, Fort Edmonton emerged as the leading centre of the Saskatchewan district fur trade. HBC rebuilt the fort on higher ground in 1830 near the present-day Alberta Legislature Building. After the Hudson's Bay Company surrendered Rupert's Land, the Fort fell into disuse and was dismantled in 1915. Today the City of Edmonton operates Fort Edmonton Park, located in southwest Edmonton. The Park features a reconstruction of the Fort and, as a living museum, depicting the early development of Edmonton.
