Caption: This picture shows meal time in the raft. They would eat when the raft was snubbed up or when they were going through calm water. My father, J. A. L. MacDougall, is frying the meat, Bob Plautz is behind him, a man called Billy-the-buster is behind him and the other man is Charlie Lark, a Dane, about six foot four and broad and strong in proportion. He could hold a scoop shovel, (not the modern aluminum ones) out at arms' length without it turning. Once in a livery barn in Edmonton he was promised a colt, if he could carry it. He could lift it but the colt would not co-operate. He was drunk as usual when he struck town after a dry winter and it took a number of police men to put him in jail where he was kept until the boss was ready to go up river again. Once Charlie and a companion were not sobering up as fast as expected and were doing a poor job of languishing in prison until the police discovered that like all good lumber-jacks Charlie and Otto were resourceful and knew how to make the best of a bad spot. The police had stored some liquor they confiscated in the next cell, so Charlie and Otto made a noose out of their shoelaces and were snaring the bottles and drawing them into their cell." - Norah MacDougall
