Description of Historic Place
The Hulbert Block is a three storey, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building. The building is located in a prominent location on Whyte Avenue in the Old Strathcona Provincial Historic Area.
Heritage Value
Constructed in 1912, the Hulbert Block is significant because of its architecture, which is representative of Edmonton’s commercial architecture during the Edwardian era.
The Hulbert Block is significant because of its association with the development of the community of Strathcona, one of south Edmonton’s oldest settled neighbourhoods dating from the arrival of the railway in 1892, and a separate city until amalgamation with Edmonton in 1912.
The Hulbert Block is significant because of its association with R.A. Hulbert. Hulbert, who was the builder and first owner of the Hulbert Block, was a well-known contractor and prominent member of the community of Strathcona.
The Hulbert Block is significant for its contribution to the historic character of the of the Old Strathcona streetscape, in an area notable for its contiguous collection of Edwardian era buildings and designation as a Provincial Historic Area.
Character-Defining Elements
The Edwardian Commercial Architecture of the Hulbert Block is expressed in character defining elements such as:
• form scale and massing;
• flat roof;
• retail unit at ground level;
• metal cornice above the retail unit;
• three concrete pilasters delineating the portion of the façade above the retail unit into two bays;
• red brick cladding;
• 8 one over one windows the north elevation;
• dentilated metal cornice below parapet;
• red brick parapet with concrete parapet cap; and
• 11 one over one windows on the rear elevation with concrete lintels and sills.
