Environment: |
The house is located on what was once a farm at the Northwest edge of Trochu. It is surrounded by a lovely parklike setting with many varieties of trees, flowering shrubs and perennial flowers artistically arranged around the property. It is becoming overgrown from neglect. This area is actually an extension of Poplar Avenue and was called the subdivision. Three other houses were originally built here that are now in town. They are: Allan Gehrings, Betty Knievels and Wilmar Krauses.

History: |
This house has been the home of two bachelors, both of whom were of significance in the history of Trochu.
1908 - William. H.S. Garrick came to Trochu and had a hardware store on the first townsite.
1913 - He became Secretary Treasurer for the municipality of Roach and also had an office as CPR Land Agent, Real Estate, Loans and Insurance.
1941 - Retired and Mr. Charles Christie became Secretary Treasurer.
1946 - Mr. Garrick left Trochu and sold the house to Dr. Stewart Hay who lived here until his death on May 30, 1973. The property is now cared for by his brother Donald Hay of Calgary. The story of Dr.
Hay's life and contribution to Trochu is written up in 'Remember When' pg. 79-84. He served the town 17 years and Mr. Garrick 28 years and both lived alone here. |
