History: |
The bandstand was erected some time before 1914 on Blairmore's main street. Over time it took on an importance that transcended its use: ultimately it came to symbolize the miner's solidarity and resistance to the unfair labor practices of the coal companies. The bandstand provided a forum for union speakers and organizers and a central rallying point for strike activity throughout the Pass. It was the bandstand in March 1925 that hundreds of Pass miners marched under a red banner pained with a hammer and a sickle and the words "No Surrender, Nationalization of the Mines." It was from the bandstand that communist mine union organizers Harvey Murphy and John Stokaluk addressed the miners in 1932 during the most prolonged and bitter strike on the Pass. On May Day in 1932 the largest demonstration in the history of the Pass took place in Blairmore in front of the bandstand. |
