W.H. Sheppard came to Edmonton in 1894. He owned the Strathcona Hotel.
New Brewery erected to increase plant capacity, as market had gotten so large that Rossdale Brewery could not meet demand.
Sick's Breweries acquired control of Edmonton Brewery in December 1926 with W.H. Sheppard founder of Rossdale Brewery as the first manager under sick. Molson's bought out Sick's interest in 1958.
Tom Lines and W.E. Lines associated with firm.
Plant advertised as being on no less than 5 railway lines and thus could ship its product out rapidly to anywhere in Northern Alberta.

Name plaque on tower: 'Edmonton Brewing & Malting Co. Limited. Owned by W.H. Sheppard, early Strathcona entrepreneur and mayor, who sold to Sick's Breweries of Lethbridge.'
The magnificent two hundred and fifty thousand dollar brewery on 21st Street, just erected by the Edmonton Brewing Company, had a narrow escape from total destruction at 2.35 this morning, and only the prompt arrival of the brigade from the West End fire hall prevented what might have been a great catastrophe.
The erection of the building has just been completed, and kilns were being used to thoroughly dry the cement so as to have the brewery ready for occupation as early as possible. One of the kilns became overheated and ignited the wooden floor. The firemen put in some strenuous work for some time and succeeded in extinguishing the flames before they had made much headway. But for their timely arrival, and the fact that the blaze was discovered in its incipient stage, the splendid erection would be a mass of ruins this morning.
The Edmonton Brewing & Malting Company was owned by W.H. Sheppard, an early Strathcona mayor and entrepreneur, who later sold to Sick’s Breweries of Lethbridge. This handsome industrial structure, one of the finest in the city, was built to replace the firm's earlier brewery, which still survives at 9843 - 100 Street in Rossdale. This building is a dramatic illustration of how function determined the appearance of industrial structures; the building is asymmetrical throughout, with a central four-storey tower flanked by two and three storey wings. |
