HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE
The historical significance of Emmanuel Lutheran Church lies primarily in the close links between the foundation and growth of the church and the pattern of overall settlement and community growth in the Czar region. The formation of the congregation in 1910 coincided with the establishment of the hamlet of Czar and more significantly, with the foundation of the nucleus of a sizeable and close knit Swedish community in the area. The Canadian Pacific Railway reached Czar in the spring of 1910. This event precipitated an influx of agricultural settlers in the Czar district of British or Scandinavian origin.
The congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church was exclusively Swedish. Typically, churches were the first institutions to be established among Swedish immigrants in North America, and Immanuel Lutheran was no exception. Among the original settlers was Pastor Olof Lindgren, who had previously served in parishes in Central Alberta, and who immediately assumed the ministerial duties of the new congregation. |
