History: |
The pump house is located on the north side of the Red Deer River and the northeast side of the Highway 54 Bridge. There is an access road that goes down to the river from the highway, the pump house is just to the east of the access road. The earliest land records for this LSD are from 1877 when the owner was “The Saskatchewan Land and Homestead Company” The records show that the land changed hands at least three times before being bought by Ernest Bateman in 1919. The title for the land was transferred to Norman Bateman (the son of Ernest Bateman) in 1955. According to N. Bateman the pump house was by built in 1939 to supply the Big Bend (now Innisfall) Airport with water from the Red Deer River. There is information stating that the airport was built in 1914 by the Government of Canada as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Command (Munro 1987). Therefore, the exact date of the building of the structure is unknown. At the end of WW11 the base was closed the building were dismantled, except for the garage and the pump house, (Munro 1987). According to Don Rasmussen of the Innisfail Flying Club the garage was demolished in the 1990's leaving the pump house as the onlu building associated with the Big Bend Airport and the WW11 training base still standing in its original location. |
