History: Original owner - Jang Fang, Company. Second floor small residences. Original building 25' /70'.
Wall painted signs identify building in both English and Chinese characters. By 1918 bldg. was used by Chinese National League.
The Kuo Min Tang Building was built sometime between 1909 and 1910 in what was known as the “Restricted Area” of Lethbridge.
The building appears to have been originally used as a Chinese restaurant, but by 1913 its documented use is as a Lodge Hall.
In June 1915 it became the official headquarters of the Chinese Revolutionary Party (a.k.a. the Chinese National League/Lodge), an important Chinese fraternal and political association that was formed in Canada in 1911.
Many of the League members provided money for a Chinese Public School to be opened in the extension at the rear of the building. The school appears to have been operational in the 1960s and early 1970s. It provided Chinese classes after regular school hours.
Today evening classes are held there in the Chinese language. This is one of the few remaining buildings in what was Lethbridge's Chinatown.
