He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from the University of Alberta in 1964. He practiced law in Edmonton, Alberta with the firm of Reynolds, Mirth and Côté. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Alberta in 1987. In 1999 he was appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Nunavut. He has been a lecturer, practitioner-in-residence and justice-in-residence for the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. He researched a wide range of legal matters, including appeal procedures and international law, in Canada and in the United States. He studied the causes of the delay in hearing appeals as well as the excessive workload in Canadian Courts of Appeal.
