Églande Andrea Mercier was born in Beaumont on December 18, 1918, the eldest of four children. Her parents, Alfred Dubord and Anna Vaugeois, lived on a farm in the Beaumont area. Her father came from North Dakota while Anna had moved from St. Roch de Mekinac, Quebec, to Beaumont. Églande was educated by the Daughters of Jesus at the Morinville Convent and then graduated from Normal School in Camrose, Alberta in 1939. She then taught at the Tellier School in Morinville and later at Ste Bernadette School in Picardville near Westlock. She met in Picardville her husband Noel Mercier whom she married in 1941. Églande and Noel had five children. Together they farmed until their harvest was destroyed by fall hail during three subsequent years. They then moved to Edmonton where together with Peter Germaine they founded Mercier & Germaine Plumbing & Heating business in Jasper Place which they operated for 26 years. When Noel retired, Églande continued to work in Edmonton first with a survey company and later she managed the Manoir St. Joachim which is a retirement home for Francophone seniors.

Églande was very active in the Franco-Albertan community in Edmonton. She served on several boards of directors and volunteered as secretary and treasurer for many associations. She was one of the founding members of the Fédération des femmes canadiennes-françaises de l’Alberta and she volunteered for this association from 1972 to 1990. She also helped to preserve the French-Canadian and Metis art of finger weaving by developing the association Les Amis du fléché and the Cercle d’artisanat canadien-français d’Edmonton. She volunteered for Les Amis du fléché from 1978 to 1997 and for the Cercle d’artisanat canadien-français d’Edmonton from 1982 to 2007. She was also a founding member of the Regroupement des aînés de la région d’Edmonton which was a federation of Francophone seniors in Edmonton. She volunteered for this organization from 1991 to 2009. In 1989 she helped establish the Fédération des aînés francophones de l’Alberta and created its logo. She volunteered for this federation of seniors from 1989 to 2005. She volunteered from 1991 to 2002 for the Club d’âge d’or de Saint-Joachim which was a club of Edmonton seniors on the Saint-Joachim parish. Églande also studied on Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta, where she took courses in theology, sociology and history until she was 91 years old. Her husband died in 2006 and she died on July 16, 2014, in Edmonton.
